Alright. So I have worked at Macy’s for…shit. For two years. And the past few months have been at a make-up counter. I’m the worst anti-capitalist ever, I know.
And honestly, this post just needs to be written.
It’s not a surprise that corporations don’t care about people. And it’s not a surprise that cosmetics come in the most unaccomodating shades for women and men of any color besides lily white.
This video circulated around at the store I worked at. I think it’s incredibly racist and offensive. Most people thought it was hilarious.
But I think you, tumblr, should know that this is what the people selling shit to you are saying.
Stores teach you to judge your customers. Macy’s did it. When I used to fit bras (my resume is so impressive, right?), they gave me a nice little sheet with demographics of my “ideal client,” AKA, “client most likely to buy the most shit.” It went something like:
- Female.
- Wears size 12 clothes.
- Is generally “ethnic.”
- Has money, but does not work.
- Has children, but does not shop with them.
- Cares about looking “stylish.”
And so on.
Shoppers get profiled all the time, and you worry about it when you worry that people will think you are stealing.
But it’s more than that.
They teach you to single out people who they think will buy more.
I can’t tell you how many times I have been chatting with another associate, pointed out a customer shopping in their area, and had them respond “Oh they’re not going to buy anything anyway.”
This is what they think about you when you’re young, black, non-English speaking, not dressed immaculately, and so on.
White people need to pay attention. It is a privilege to be acknowledged in a store.
I’m quitting my job. I found something much better that doesn’t make me feel like I’m selling my soul.
But before I left, I figured I would impart some knowledge.
Stores judge you. And you shouldn’t have to accept that. And if you’re getting attention and preferential treatment over someone else because of your privilege, you need to say something. It’s not a privilege you deserve.
The way you look, who you are, where you are from, gives absolutely no indication as to what you will buy, and what kind of help you need.
Stores need to know that. So I’m going to start making sure that’s what I’m conveying, behind the counter or on the other side. I would hope you will too.
Wow, this video is INCREDIBLY racist. How could people think this is funny?! Oh yea, because it’s a white woman making fun of WOC. Right.
